Moving from a place you’ve called home your entire life to another part of the world can be jarring. You may not understand the customs, the language, or how to start your journey to becoming a U.S. citizen.
And once you’ve arrived and settled in, you may also yearn to find a place that reminds you of home – a place where your own culture, custom, and language can live on. For Bosnians in the Chicago community, that place is the Bosnia Herzegovinian American Community Center (BHACC).
The Mission
Chicago is home to more than 70,000 Bosnians who have come to this country for a variety of reasons. Each has come here to make Chicago their home and explore their dreams in a uniquely American way.
The Bosnian Herzegovinian American Community Center seeks to provide Bosnian expats living in the Chicago area with the educational, recreational, and social experiences needed to fully help them adjust to life in the U.S.
Their support services include:
- Language tutoring
- Classes on citizenship
- Medical screenings for senior citizens
- A myriad of cultural events
BHACC seeks to help those from Bosnia foster relationships with their neighbors, too, by introducing Chicagoans to what it means to be from Bosnia, and sharing the rich culture they proudly wish to carry on.
