Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, and the Future of Disability Law at the ISBA Mid-Year Meeting

Really enjoyed attending the Illinois State Bar Association’s Joint Mid-Year Meeting (December 11–12, 2025), held in conjunction with the 54th Annual Convention of the Illinois Judges Association, at the JW Marriott Chicago Hotel in downtown Chicago.

It was especially gratifying to see how several of my classmates from Loyola University Chicago School of Law have gone on to serve as judges here in the State of Illinois.

I also attended an excellent seminar on Artificial Intelligence, which featured, among others, attorney Aaron W. Brooks, the primary author of the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission’s, “The Illinois Attorney’s Guide to Implementing AI.” It was a timely and thoughtful discussion on how lawyers can responsibly and ethically integrate AI into their legal practices.

As an attorney who helps disabled individuals obtain their U.S. Social Security disability benefits, and as a member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR), it was particularly interesting to consider how these developments are already affecting the practice of disability law..

The discussion also underscored the ethical obligation under the Illinois Rule of Professional Conduct 1.1 for attorneys to remain competent as technology continues to evolve.
